Comeback Daniil Medvedev Wins Maiden Trophy in Over Two Years

Nineteen of the Russian's twenty-one championships have been won on hard courts

A comeback Medvedev secured his initial trophy for 882 days with success over Frenchman Moutet in the tournament final.

The Russian, a former number one, has endured a difficult season, managing just one win at the major tournaments and experiencing a difficult moment at the New York tournament.

Medvedev's varied form on the tennis tour - and struggles with his serve in particular - resulted in him dropping out of the world's top 10 and finally splitting with former mentor Gilles Cervara.

Presently collaborating with Johansson and his other coach, the tennis star has consistently improved in the past month - culminating in a closely contested 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over opponent Corentin Moutet.

It is the player's initial championship since the Rome competition and initial on a hard court since spring of 2023.

The win also means the Russian has secured 21 championships at 21 various competitions.

"This marks the first occasion I'm at a tournament with my children together, so to win a trophy is particularly special," commented ranked player Daniil Medvedev.

"This title is in honour of my child her name, because the maiden victory I got when my child Alisa was born was for her."

The athlete, the former major winner, had been defeated in his last six title deciders, including in the German tournament in the past months.

Medvedev's defensive play style and regular outbursts on the playing surface had led observers to doubt if his capacity to perform at the elite level was over.

But the player has made changes in the last few weeks, making an effort to come to the net and play positively, supported by an enhanced serve.

He recovered from a disadvantage in the initial set against the challenging Moutet, winning four of the final five points to gain the advantage.

The pair traded service breaks in the middle set before the Frenchman, attempting for his initial tour championship, took control to create a third set.

He saved four early-game opportunities in a tight deciding set before the Russian won the break to that score to close out the victory.

Suitably, he clinched the win with a rally at the front of the court, with Moutet incapable to handle a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
