Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
